FLYSURFER Athlete Olly Bridge becomes U21 vice-World Champion Formula Kite Hydrofoil im Oman!
For the grand finale of a long Hydrofoil competition season, our FLYSURFER race team took part in the Formula Kite World Championships in the Middle East with the additional support of SONIC RACE master mind Benni Boelli. The 5-day regatta led by Oman Sail backed by Al Mouj Muscat took place in the Gulf of Oman and created an epic setting for the 58 participants from 22 countries.
After 2 race days and 12 almost faultless races, FLYSURFER Athlete Olly Bridge is in first place with 11 wins. The Brit underlines his steadily improving form and leads the Gold Fleet, closely followed by favorite Nico Parlier and his biggest rival, Axel Mazella.
The events come to a epic battle on day 3 and 4 when the world elite meet together in the same (Gold) fleet for the Final Series. A heavy crash from reigning world champion Maxime Nocher and US Sailing star Riley Gibbs prevent a repeated success of Nocher to become Formula Kite Hydrofoil World Champion again on our SONIC RACE. However, it is Nico Parlier who, demonstrates his unbelievable consistency over the whole season and puts the competition in extremely tight races to his hand.
So it comes on the final day that Parlier can only beat himself, but the race for the Under-21 World Championship between Olly Bridge and Axel Mazella is still open.
Knowing that everything is in the game, Olly Bridge risks everything and lands in 4th place after the first race, which brings Axel Mazella up to a 3 point difference in the overall standings. The drama takes its course as Bridge, in the lead, in the second of the 3 medal races, misses the upwind buoy by a hair and must tack again, the race ended in a disastrous 8th place for him. Nico Parlier becomes the deserved Formula Kite Hydrofoil World Champion at the end of that second race of the day. In the final medal race Axel Mazella uses the favor and finishes first and becomes U21 winner when he crosses the finish line.
Olly Bridge has delivered a terrific performance and achieved a superb 3rd place in the overall standings and becomes vice-World Champion in the U21 ranking! FLYSURFER athlete Martin Dolenc becomes vice-World Champion in the U18 ranking closely followed by FLYSURFER athlete Mani Bisschops on 3rd place.
FLYSURFER would like to thank our athletes for the strong cohesion and all the great kite racing moments this year! We are proud of you and thankful that you represent our brand!
