Today we want to share with you our recent interview with Richard Horak from the KITE CENTER COSTA TEGUISE. Enjoy!
Who or what is behind the KITE CENTER COSTA TEGUISE?:
„My name is Richard Horak, I am from Austria, and I have been involved with water sports since I was a kid. I started kitesurfing in 1999. My “teacher” was the Windtools Softkites website. In 2001, I received my instructor’s license and started working as a kite instructor for Windtool Softkites on Lake Garda. In the winter I would travel to Tarifa and taught using FLYSURFER soft kites and every
brand of tube kite which came onto the market. In 2005, I founded my own company in Borkum (Germany) and Wadi Lahami (Egypt). Since 2012 I have been living on the island of Lanzarote and in 2015 I founded my own school there. ”
Where is your school located and what are your teaching methods?:
„I teach on the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands), but I don’t just use a single location for classes; instead I always look to pick a suitable spot on the island that features the wind conditions that are perfect for my students. On the island we have the widest range of different conditions, from shallow water to deep water, and calm water to waves. My main teaching spot is Costa Teguise, which is also where my school is based. Here I teach my courses from a boat. Famara is another spot which we go to often that features shallow water and waves. Here you can always find the right location for any level of experience. I teach only very small groups with a maximum of 2 students, never more than that. I have had great results with these more-or-less private lessons. I have been teaching since 2001 and am VDWS certified.”
Which FLYSURFER products do you use for your classes?:
„I actually use all FLYSURFER products, ranging from the Viron 6.0 to the Cronix 8.0 & 10.0 to the Boost 13.0 and the Speed4 in 15.0 m2“
It’s great to hear that you use such a wide range of our products. What exactly attracts you to FLYSURFER kites?:
„With FLYSURFER soft kites everything is easier and works faster. Especially for beginners, soft kites are easier to control in light and gusty winds. The kite range really suits my students, from beginners to advanced riders. I personally love soft kites for several reasons; one of them is that they don’t become damaged as quickly, which is of course a great advantage for a kite school. ”
Why should students come to your school for instruction?:
„We have the perfect location for kitesurfing — even for beginners who have some experience but are still somewhat uncontrolled when kiting downwind. At our school you don’t need to be worried about being embarrassed about your ability level, especially not with our 2:1 or 1:1 student-teacher ratios. Lanzarote is a small island and you can quickly travel from one kite spot to another. This allows students/kiters to easily sample a diverse range of conditions. We try to be open to all ages and to get the whole family involved. We find that kids are really into kitesurfing.”
Do you offer anything else unique when compared to other kite schools?::
„Kiting is a social sport, so bring your whole family! We kite in all four seasons and in all elements!”
Thanks for the great interview!
